About Us
The Hardin Valley Elementary Learning Garden enhances the educational experience through hands on learning. Our educators use the garden to teach math and science concepts as well as reading, writing, vocabulary, social studies, and geography. The students get involved in the food production cycle to appreciate how food is grown and encourage future careers in agriculture. Our Harvest of the Month Tastings introduce children to fresh, new vegetables to create lifelong healthy eating habits and combat the increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes. Our Seed Library gives students opportunities to bring their knowledge home and grow produce for their own families. Recess Garden Club is a recess alternative some of our students created when they wanted more time in the garden. This extra time allows our students to really take ownership of the garden and become environmental stewards. Families are invited to the garden for various Community Workdays as well as Summer Family Garden Club. We cannot do all these wonderful things without the support of our Garden Parents, dedicated parent volunteers from each classroom, and our Master Gardener volunteers. Our highest goal is to create a curriculum based garden system that becomes a model garden which can easily be duplicated in schools across Tennessee.
